JAMES BASKNIGHT-JONES
I grew up in a very music-oriented family, listening to various songs to start our day, during chores, or even playing music based games like Rock Band or Just Dance! It was always like an extension of my life, which made me realize how invaluable music is when it comes to connecting people together (even looking throughout history!). After I started piano lessons around the age of 9, I began creating my own music, sometimes even writing my own lyrics, which led to today where I focus on composing soundtracks intended for games and media. I’ve been learning composing and music production for about seven years now, and recently, I’ve entered three online music composing competitions, each ranking within top placements. I’m excited on continuing to do more, especially as I pursue my degree in Composition at UT Arlington!
Music should always seem like a form of expression. Whether for performances or composition, there’s a part of someone that they’re willing to share through the music (whether visibly when watching them perform or audibly just by listening). Furthermore, music isn’t always perfect—sometimes not fitting in specific genres, or some “wrong” notes may be embedded into the song—it’s that specific element that makes music human and why, at the end of the day, it should be enjoyed freely.
